Regional Variations of Decoupage

 

Belgian

Usually done with a knife similar to silhouette cutting.

English

Feathery and intricately cut.

French

Used intricate and lacy cutting and is fanciful and ornate.

German

decoupage (and some Austrian) was heavier following the character of Biedermeier furniture. Scrapbook pictures of embossed flowers, birds and other miniatures were prefer solidly pasted together in geometric forms (medallions, octagons, diamonds, circles and squares).

Italian

Follows the style of furniture and the city in which it was done. Venetian pieces were ornate and opulent. From Genoese were sturdier and less flamboyant. Sicilian decoupage used bright paper cutouts on festival carts.

Mexican

Bight and colorful and is used as decoration for holiday festive articles.

Norwegian

Devotes itself almost entirely to mythological subjects.

Polish

Uses brightly colored papers and tinsel superimposed.

Portuguese

Brilliant and dazzling and is similar to Pennsylvania Dutch patterns.

 

Swedish

Uses earthy monotones with black and white engravings being colored with burnt apricot, forest green, dark salmon and peach umber and used on dark painted backgrounds.
